Women in many cultures have used lemon or lime juice for contraception and vaginal hygiene for centuries; however, despite rumours that say otherwise, these juices are not only ineffective as a microbicide to prevent transmission of HIV, but can actually cause HIV transmission more easily because of the damage that they do to vaginal tissues.

This document gives resources, including a brief review of studies of the use of citrus juices as microbicides and their effect on the human body; answers questions about whether there are useful natural microbicides; and advises readers to send clear messages to other women about the true after effects of these substances, and suggests using other forms of protection until a microbicidal solution is found.
