Amnesty International has published their research entitled Harmfully Isolated: Criminalizing Sex Work in Hong Kong to accompany their Policy on State Obligations to Respect, Protect, and Fulfil the Human Rights of Sex Workers. Sex work itself is not illegal in Hong Kong, but many activities surrounding sex work are included solicitation, owning or being found in a brothel, and living off the earnings of a sex worker. Amnesty International found that police violate the human rights of sex workers by abusing them, and using their power against them.

Since sex workers in Hong Kong do not have access to police protection, they are also more vulnerable to abuse from perpetrators.

Contents include:

  • Police misuse of laws and powers to set up, punish, and abuse sex workers;
  • Specific abuses against transgender sex workers;
  • How sex work is criminalized in Hong Kong;
  • Abuses by clients;
  • How we conducted our research;
  • Conclusion and recommendations.

This resource is useful for all sex workers, sex workers' rights advocates, and allies interested in learning about the regulation of sex work in Hong Kong, and the violations of rights occuring there.
