NSWP mourns the passing of Laura Lee, a prominent and respected sex worker rights advocate who passed away on 7th February 2018.

Laura was a fierce advocate for sex workers’ rights, and campaigned in Ireland and Scotland against laws that criminalise sex work. Recently she fought the introduction of the Nordic model in Northern Ireland, which went on to be introduced in October 2016. A judge since ruled that the laws breached human rights to privacy and freedom from discrimination, and Laura crowdfunded £7,000 to continue the fight against the law that endangers sex workers. She was due to continue the judicial review process this Spring.

The sad news was announced by Laura’s daughter on 8th February. There has been an outpouring of tributes to Laura on social media, and many sex worker organisations have released statements of sympathy and support for Laura's work. Laura worked closely with two NSWP members: SWAI in Ireland and SCOT-PEP in Scotland, who have both released statements (SWAI / SCOT-PEP).

"In honour of Laura Lee and her loving daughter Catherine, rally towards sex workers’ rights and decriminalisation. This is her legacy and this is our collective project".

Laura’s family have asked for privacy, and a crowdfunding campaign has been launched to cover funeral costs and financial support for Laura’s daughter.
