Membership and governance

Membership

NSWP’s members are local, national and regional sex worker organisations and networks, across five regions: Africa; Asia and the Pacific; Europe (including Eastern Europe and Central Asia); Latin America and North America and the Caribbean.

All member organisations are required to endorse NSWP’s core values and the Consensus Statement on Sex Work, Human Rights, and the Law.

Regional networks are an important component in the global network as NSWP works with the regional networks to enable them to support national networks and organisations. Regional networks that are members of NSWP include: African Sex Workers Alliance (ASWA); Asia Pacific Network of Sex Workers (APNSW); International Committee for the Rights of Sex Workers in Europe (ICRSE); Sex Workers’ Rights Advocacy Network for Central and Eastern Europe and Central Asia (SWAN); Latin America Platform of Sex Workers (PLAPERTS), and Caribbean Sex Work Coalition (CSWC).

Only sex worker-led organisations and networks have voting rights. Organisations can apply to join NSWP as a sex worker-led organisation with voting rights or as a supporter without voting rights. Organisations wishing to apply for membership of NSWP must complete a membership application, which are reviewed against the criteria for sex worker-led organisations and fit with NSWP core values. All applications are reviewed and approved by the regional representatives in the Board of Directors.

Note: For both safety and security NSWP does not identify which members are sex worker-led on our website, and members can choose not to be listed on the public website.

Governance

NSWP is governed by a Board of Directors. NSWP’s Board comprises a President (elected by the global voting membership) and two representatives from each of the five regions (selected by the regional membership). The President and Board members are nominated for a period of two years; however, one regional board member rotates off the Board each year to ensure continuity. The Board elects from within its membership a Vice President and Executive Committee.

For more details on the governance of NSWP see the 'NSWP organisational development and operational handbook'.
