• ¿Provees servicios a trabajadoras sexuales?
Tell us about your organisation
Red de Mujeres Trabajadoras Sexuales de Bobija Pando Bolivia is a very small organisation and was founded in 2018 in the Amazon, in the smallest Pando Cobija Department in Bolivia. It has 65 thousand inhabitants, and the organisation has only 20 female sex workers, not counting the Brazilian partners, since they are not interested in organising. I’m always active in everything I can; I’m working for women sex workers and also for raped girls and femicides, together to form an alliance free of violence.
What is the history of the organisation? How and why was it formed?
When I arrived to the Cobija Departement to work, I saw the abuses of the authorities, police, city halls, municipal government, the defense of children and migration.
I saw my colleagues lining up to show their identity cards, the health card, I just looked while having a beer, and I saw that and I politely went to introduce myself as a former leader of sex workers.
I told them that they did not have to check the health card of my colleagues. I asked if there was a person in charge regarding health, but there wasn’t. I asked them for their identifications according to the defense resolution. I asked the sex workers to put back their health cards. The agents did not say anything and stayed quiet because I was right. There was a television channel and they interviewed me and recorded me. I told them that I am a public figure and I am not ashamed of what I am. They asked me if I agreed with these raids I said yes, always when they are caried out respecting the rights of my colleagues. All sex workers thanked me, even the owner of the venue and there they asked me to be their president. This is how this organisation was formed.
I was trained in 2005 and I was the director until 2015 when I got sick. Everything fell apart because I was the only open sex worker. Today I stand up again, and I am where I am because of PLAPERTS and I am part of Alianza Liderazgo en Positivo (ALEP). The project known as Alianza Liderazgo en Positivo (HIV Positive Leadership) and Poblaciones Clave (Key Populations) strengthens and trains social organisations and key populations to do advocacy work. The goal is to achieve a better quality of life and full human rights for all key populations living with HIV in Latin America.
What is the sex work context in your country/region?
The issue of rights and health, since they focused more on COVID, means there was no care for SWs and in fact many went to work and there were transmitted with HIV. The ones that already had HIV, had to work clandestinely to earn some money, and they transmitted to others. Many HIV+ SWs did not go to pick up their medicine for fear of retaliation and ended up dying.
As a leader I do more advocacy in the Pando Cobija Department, but I support other networks of Bolivian sex workers. They always ask me what they are going to do and if it's okay or not. Another thing they ask me is organising a national congress to have a national acronym but respecting their departmental autonomy, but we have no resources. Note that some of these networks are already participating in ALEP activities.
Do you provide services to sex workers? What kind?
I am a sex worker and that is why I fight for the sex workers’ movement. I have 20 years’ experience as a worker with long experience as a leader and managing the sex workers’ movement on a national level as Organización Nacional de Activistas por la Emancipación de la Mujer (ONAEM). Due to health problems I left ONAEM and because of the ambition of some leaders it disappeared.
Today I feel very well, and I am putting my energy to create this other organisation because I saw the violations my colleagues faced and they chose me as their leader and I want their health and HIV issues to be respected.
Do you do political work, or campaigns? What kind?
I do political work for the recognition of sex work. This is how I managed to get identity cards for sex workers. We all have rights, and we cannot continue to be criminalised. We are always in social, health and laws and resolutions control in which they teach the consequences of each institution. We also report when there is sexual exploitation within other institutions.
How are sex workers meaningfully included in the organisation?
All sex workers have the right to be part of the organisation, but since it is a very small department they do not dare to make themselves visible but when something happens they call me. I also coordinate with 8 departments of different sex worker organisations.
Tell us about a big event or challenge you have worked on recently. For example, a campaign, a big event you worked on, etc. How did it go? What were the challenges?
The last event was on June 2nd (International Sex Workers’ Day), it was massive since for the first time my colleagues from different departments showed their faces and marched. They recorded many video interviews. June 2nd had a lot of repercussions.
I also managed to present shelters and grocery stores for my colleagues and their children to the Global Fund. All the leaders from the different departments participated. I got the idea of foster homes because I made a survey and I saw many there who were kicked out from their houses for different reasons during the pandemic.
What challenges does your organisation face in the future?
That there is division. I think it is ok if there are different organisations, but I am not ok that they only appear when there are resources for activities; they are there to receive a salary. Now as with PLAPERTS and ALEP and when all the leaders receive such amount of information, they realized that together we can achieve many things. We have already improved our involvement and 8 departments work together. There is one that belongs to RedTraSex (Red de Mujeres Trabajadoras Sexuales LAC) that does not want to participate with us and we have respected it.
Does the organisation have a message for the sex worker rights movement? What about for people outside of the movement?
I am proud to be a sex worker. I stand up for myself and for those who do not yet show their faces. I got to be myself again and I felt an immense relief, it was like downloading something.
