From 18 to 23 July 2010, the Global Network of Sex Work Projects (NSWP), together with sex workers and allies from nearly 40 countries, gathered at the 18th International AIDS Conference, in Vienna, Austria.

With red umbrellas that were visible at plenary, in sessions, on stage and at protests throughout the week, sex workers demanded that donors, governments, policy makers, researchers, and other key players recognise and support the human rights of sex workers.

London’s first ever Sex Worker Film Festival will take place Saturday 12 June 2011 at the Rio Cinema from 1:15-5:30pm in East London, featuring short films and documentaries by and about sex workers and their fight for their human and labour rights.

All funds raised from the film festival will go towards creating the next edition of the Sex Worker Open University 12-16 October 2011 in London, which is currently inviting submissions.

2 day  Conference on Sex Work and Human Rights taking place in Ankara, Turkey.

AWID is the Association for Women’s rights in Development and the AWID Forum is the biggest regular meeting on issues for women in development.

Sex workers have been present at previous Forums and have had quite an impact. Notably, in 2006 in Bangkok, activists got sex workers onto the agenda of women’s human rights funders, and TG sex workers pushed for transgenders to be included in organisations fighting for women’s human rights and funding women’s rights.

This year in Istanbul we will have the largest organised presence of sex workers at an AWID Forum, and the theme is timely - Transforming Economic Power.

Sex workers aim to bring up sex work and issues for sex workers in all the themes and strands of the Forum and its debates with a goal of including sex workers in discussions of women’s economic rights and also challenging those feminist organisations who still see us as victims and who promote polices that further our stigma and marginalisation.
