Who do you work with?

Caribbean Vulnerable Communities Coalition (CVC) is a coalition of community leaders and non-governmental agencies that are advocates and service providers working to remove barriers of stigma and discrimination and to reduce the prevalence of HIV among the key populations vulnerable to HIV infection who lack the social and legal protection afforded to other members of society.

How are sex workers involved in your organisation?

The CVC membership includes the Sex Worker Association of Jamaica (SWAJ), the Guyana Sex Worker Association and the Caribbean Sex Workers Coalition. Members of the CVC Board also sit on the governing body of the Caribbean Sex Work Coalition. CVC supports capacity building and advocacy efforts to impact national and regional HIV and health policy and programmes using a human rights approach.

Which of NSWP priority areas does your organisation work on?
Oppose the criminalisation and other legal oppression of sex work and support its recognition as work
Critique the trafficking paradigm that conflates representations of sex work, migration, and mobility
Advocate for universal access to health services, including primary health care, HIV and sexual and reproductive health services
Speak out about violence against sex workers, including violence from police, institutions, clients, and intimate partners, while challenging the myth that sex work is inherently gender-based violence
Oppose human rights abuses, including coercive programming, mandatory testing, raids and forced rehabilitation
Challenge stigma and discrimination against sex workers, their families and partners, and others involved in sex work
Advocate for the economic empowerment and social inclusion of sex workers as sex workers
What are the two main challenges that the sex workers you work with face

CVC provides support to regional advocacy for stigma free services, social protection of vulnerable groups including removal of legislative barriers to HIV and for appropriate health treatment and care. CVC advocates for countries to provide a legal framework for equal access to justice, policies that clearly adhere to equal treatment in services, and provide citizens (service providers, policymakers and communities) with information on rights and responsibilities so that persons understand risks and have the ability to make informed choices.
